Bio: Germaine Arnaktauyok: Female artist
& printmaker, born Sept. 26, 1946, lives
in Igloolik. Studied fine art at the University
of Manitoba. She has had great success as
an illustrator. Exhibitions: Canada including
the Northwest Territories. Honoured by Prime
Minister John Chretian in 2000 for her image
of the Drummer used on the two dollar coin
commemorating the new millennium and the new
territory of Nunavut and also her image of
the Mother and Child on the two hundred dollar
gold coin for the Native Cultures and Traditions
Series commissioned by the Royal Canadian
Mint. Ever mindful of her Inuit background
even while working with master printer Paul
Machnik in his Montreal studio or Mary Jo
Major in Calgary Germaine's images depict
ceremonies, customs, superstitions and reality
of her culture while reaffirming traditional
Inuit values.
