Kelly Qimirpik

Born 1948
Ikirasaq
Cape Dorset

Kelly first started carving at the age of 14, and was influenced by his brother Allashua Atsiaq. He started by reworking his brother’s rejects and then developed his own style. Kelly has had exhibitions worldwide and now his son Pits Qimirpik is making a name for himself.

In this featured work, Kelly has broken away from the common practice of carving animals and ventured into something more unique. “After the Shower” is carved in an almost black serpentine and has used baleen to make the comb.

In 2002 Kelly was involved with the installation of a 30 foot Inukshuk at Battery Park in Toronto to celebrate World Youth Day and the visit of Pope John Paul II.
